The Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime series is one of the top-rated animes on Netflix, with a 97% viewer rating and a 100% critic rating on the Rottentomatoes website. One of the famous characters from the series is Rebecca, who has a remarkably childlike design (often called Loli in the anime community).

CD Projekt Red (the producers) originally wanted this character gone, or likely the design changed, but Trigger Studios dismissed CD Projekt Red’s concerns about Rebecca’s character.

Studio Triggers (known for Kill la Kill, Darling in the franxx) allegedly even insisted that “the loli stay” when most staff wanted to remove her from the anime entirely, according to CD Projekt Red’s developers. Despite this, the developer now dubs Rebecca the “best girl” due to her popularity, and both teams seem to be on the same page now.

“She’s the best girl. But I feel a little guilty saying this because I was one of the people on the creative team who voted to remove Rebecca from the original cast during pre-production.” said one of the team members.

Rebecca’s character concept was originally sent to CD Projekt Red and they said, “She’s a loli. There are no lolis in Night City. She doesn’t look like a character from Cyberpunk 2077.” Trigger’s reply, however, was short and sweet: “No, the loli has to stay.”

The anime makes a significant effort to clarify from the moment Rebecca is introduced that she is not a child. She doesn’t sound particularly childish in the English dub, and she doesn’t have any romantic scenes in the anime. Of course, all of this is done to avoid any kind of criticism from the viewers, who might still consider them a child.

Following the release of the Cyberpunk Edgerunner series, the Cyberpunk 2077 game also received a huge sales boost and became one of the best-selling games on Steam. As of September 18, Cyberpunk 2077 had 85,555 unique visitors on Steam, the most since early January 2021 when the game was released.

Netflix describes the anime series Cyberpunk Edgerunners as follows:

The series tells a 10-episode standalone story about a street kid trying to survive in Night City – a future city obsessed with technology and body modification. With everything to lose, he stays alive by becoming an Edgerunner – a lawless mercenary also known as a cyberpunk.
